The Best Ruler So Far...

With the quilt that's currently on the frame, I can't unfortunately post a lot about it here on my blog, due to the fact it has a lot of personal stuff on it. But I can share a little bit with you of what I've been doing on it. The quilts central panel has the equivalent of 81 blocks!! No, that's not a typo. It's central portion is a 9 x 9 layout. Four blocks are doubles, so if you want to get technical in the actual amount of blocks, there are 77 in total. They are 8 inches square in size, (except the doubles) and all individual. That means the quilting has been individual for each of them. So far, I have quilted 54 of the blocks, so still have a few to go. The above block just had straight lines quilted around the suns rays. Simple, but effective.

On another piece of my Mums artwork, I echo quilted around the Tulip shape. When she saw it, Mum suggested I do a quilt with blocks quilted like that above, alternating with Trapunto blocks!!!
(Where does she get these ideas from?????)

And lastly, but by no means least, I wanted to share with you what I feel has to be the absolute bomb in straight edge quilting rulers. I saw this shaped ruler (different brand though) being used by another long arm quilter, and have wanted to try it, as it looked relatively easy to use. When I spotted this one, I knew I had to have it. It's a Jamie Wallen ruler and I have to say it is my absolute favourite straight edge ruler. From the moment I picked it up, it was really comfortable in my hand and naturally easy to use. Don't underestimate the angle of it. I feel that is where the secret of this rulers success lies. I have other straight edge rulers in my collection, but I seriously doubt they'll get much use now, since the 'Ruby' ruler is the best one I've bought so far. I would highly recommend this one, to any long arm quilter.
Until next time, happy quilting.-Julie.

  1. Your Mum’s block is beautiful and the echo quilting was perfect for it. You should definitely continue collaborating with this!

    1. Thanks Jennifer. The idea of a bigger project between Mum and I is something we are seriously starting to think about.

  2. Did you buy some of Jamie's DVD's too while in his shop? That ruler and his Gridwork are on my radar.
