September Challenge: Fillers.

As you can see from the above photo, design ideas sometimes need to start on paper. Especially when what you are attempting to do, may be a little foreign to you. Since there are so many fillers out there that can be used on a quilt and I have not done much filler work, it meant I had to go back to the drawing board and find some and practice them first with pencil and paper. After sketching the few I knew, I checked out the Internet for inspiration. Leah Day and Angela Walters provided that inspiration, for some of the fillers you see in the above photo.

When what you stitch out resembles even slightly what you envisioned, it makes for an easier practice session. I have only just started the filler work in my challenge piece and although a little rough, I am enjoying the process. The way you see the little sections divided up for each filler, is a technique that I saw Angela Walters do and is very modern looking. I love the look of it and although I prefer more classic patterns in quilt making, therefore requiring design appropriate quilting, I could definitely see myself doing a modern quilt at some time, so as to use some of those fabulous modern quilting designs that are out there. Until next time, happy quilting.-Julie & Ash.

  1. what a great idea for the fillers. Hanging that in the studio so you can see all the different options would be wonderful, no need to flip through books. I have a zig zag quilt that I want to try a different filler on each row. 33 rows I think, I've been a little intimidated to start, but this gives me inspiration, love it!

    1. Thanks Sue, but I have to say, I love your idea of hanging the filler sampler in the studio so it's easier to reference to. I hadn't thought of that. With 33 rows that you have to do, you'll have plenty of inspiration at your fingertips. Can't wait to see what you do.
